EWS in Exchange Online Will No Longer Be Refreshed or Supported

In 2018 Microsoft, Exchange Web Services (EWS) 'S Exchange Online announced that it will no longer receive feature updates and all its users Microsoft GraphHe recommended that they move on to.

It has been announced that EWS requests from non-Microsoft applications to Exchange Online will begin to be blocked on October 1, 2026.

While these components of EWS will continue to receive security updates in the service, the product design and features will not change. This change will also apply to the EWS SDKs for Java and .NET.

With today's announcement of the EWS deprecation, EWS is still available and supported for use in production environments. However, it is recommended that you migrate to Microsoft Graph to access Exchange Online data and take advantage of the latest features and functionality.

These changes only apply to Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online (all environments), while there will be no changes to EWS on Exchange Server. Additionally, the changes to Exchange Online do not impact Outlook for Windows or Mac, Teams, or any other Microsoft products.

Migrating Applications to Microsoft Graph

There are known to be a few feature differences between EWS and Microsoft Graph, and here are some of the most common shortcomings:

  • Access to Archive Mailboxes: Providing access to archive mailboxes via Microsoft Graph is being worked on and may be updated in the future.
